A Pawsitive New Beginning

By Cameo Skager - CDHS Board President

An update on our building project – we are still moving forward with our plans to build a new building. This process has taken longer than we would have liked, but we feel we need to make correct decisions and be diligent with the donations that have been put toward the project.

Several months ago, CDHS hired The Miller Group to perform a feasibility study regarding our building project. The Miller Group interviewed many area business people, CDHS staff, board, volunteers, interested citizens, and some local officials. We are in the process of analyzing and implementing parts of the study.

Based on the study results, we determined that we need to try to lower the cost of the building, which we are currently working on. We are striving to maintain a welcoming, safe, healthy building, but not reduce the quality of the structure or the space for the animals. So far, the cost of project has been lowered by about $1 million and we are working on more possible cuts.

It was suggested that we should do the project in stages, but we have not been able to accomplish that since the building is one whole space and the dogs and cats will both need to be housed in the new area at the same time.

Because of the generosity of our members and supporters, we currently have $500,000 in the building fund – a great start as we continue raising the funds needed.

I would like to thank our campaign co-chairs, Charlene Seifert and Jerry Kemmet, for the many hours of hard work, talking with people, revising plans and searching for any changes that can be made to help make our project a reality. They have done so much and continue to push us forward toward our Pawsitive New Beginning.

If you would like to donate cash or in-kind services toward the project, please contact Charlene or Jerry by calling CDHS at 667-2020.
